Flooded Mere

Water is a notable feature of the Norfolk landscape: a ‘mere’ is essentially a deep pit in the ground filled with water which then becomes the habitat of water fowl and other aquatic creatures. Heavy winter rains typically produce the kind of flooded vista depicted in this painting, where trees and bushes around the sides are suddenly left standing in the overflow.
