There are many different names for this icon, which represents the face of Jesus imprinted on a cloth. It has been called ‘The Holy Face’; ‘The Veronica’; ‘The Image Made without Hands’. There are two stories as to how this precious cloth came into existence. One is derived from Christ’s Passion which relates that, on His sorrowful journey to Golgotha, He wiped the sweat of His face on Veronica’s veil (Western Christianity). The other story (deriving from Eastern Christianity) tells that Jesus sent this cloth as a cure to King Abgar of Edessa who suffered from leprosy. However, both these accounts involve the imprint of Jesus’ face being made indelibly on the cloth and then preserved as a relic. The composition displayed here has been inspired by many other similar icons.
