Discovering Norfolk’s past

On Wednesday evening we listened to a fascinating talk by David Bailey, who shared with us his in-depth geological and historical knowledge of Norfolk. He also brought with him fossils that he has collected over the years, including an impressive mammoth tusk he found in the Thames and part of the prehistoric animal’s tooth!

Some of the oldest fossils he found were rocks dating back from the upper Jurassic era and included fossils of what evolved to become oysters as well as fossilised sea urchins in places around Norfolk where the sea used to be. Ice age periods, he explained, helped to shape Britain over time – and it only became an island around 10,000 years ago.
