Community Life
“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there among them.”
~ Matthew 18:20
As Carmelite nuns, we live a life dedicated to continual prayer and strive to live as 'hermits in community' and as such our days are finely balanced between times of solitude and times when we come together.
True to the eremitical spirit of Carmel, we remain in silence and solitude - which includes the two hours of silent prayer each day - except when engaged with the community in liturgical prayer or other activities. Every evening, we gather for an hour for recreation - a time for all the sisters to come together to chat, sharing with one another our ideas and interests. The sisters' backgrounds are as varied as the paths that led them here and they rarely run out of things to talk about!
There is also the richness of living as part of an intergenerational community where both young and old find their place in Carmel.
Daily recreation can be as simple as sitting together for a chat. If the weather is nice, especially in the summer, we also take leisurely walks in the garden in little groups.
On some days we enjoy listening to music or playing board games, and on special occasions we also put on our own plays or hold little 'concerts' that allow our musically gifted sisters to play for the community.
As a community we share many other moments together. All of them - whether at meals, at work, or in prayer - help us to form real bonds of friendship rooted in our love for Christ and our common desire to give our ALL to God.
