Gateway to Heaven: Why the Assumption Matters to Carmel

Today we celebrate the Assumption of Our Lady, and this Feast is not just another day on the calendar for the Carmelite Order. It gives us a chance to honour Mary being taken body and soul into heaven while being reminded that she is pointing to the fulfillment of our entire spiritual journey.

In Carmel, Mary is not a distant queen. She is our Sister, our Mother, and the perfect model of contemplative life.

The wondrous event of the Assumption reveals the deep bond between her and the saints of Carmel.

The perfect model of contemplation

Carmelite spirituality is built on silence, solitude, and listening for the “still, small voice” of God. Mary lived this perfectly. Her Assumption is the direct result of a life completely emptied of self and filled with the Divine. Because she held God perfectly in her heart on earth, she was brought to dwell perfectly in His presence in heaven. For Carmelites, her Assumption proves that a life of quiet prayer leads to eternal union with God.

Our great Carmelite mystics didn’t just admire Mary from afar—they did everything they could to imitate her inner life so as to reach the heights of union with God.

St. Teresa of Ávila looked to Mary as the true Prioress of her monastery, teaching souls how to surrender completely to God’s will. St. John of the Cross saw Mary’s Assumption as the ultimate goal of the spiritual life—a soul so transformed by divine love that the transition from earth to heaven happens without resistance.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux, meanwhile, reminds us that Mary is “more Mother than Queen.” In the Assumption, Thérèse saw a mother going ahead to prepare a home for her children, making heaven feel close and accessible.

Looking Up with Hope

On the Feast of the Assumption, Carmelites don’t just look back at a past miracle; we look forward to our own future. Mary has gone where we hope to follow. By walking her path of silence, faith, and radical love, we too can look forward to the day we are united with God forever.
