Discovering Celtic spirituality rooted in the Trinity
Sister Elizabeth Ruth’s new book explores the depths of Celtic spirituality, which is rooted in the power of the Trinity. Aimed for everyone and ‘beginner-friendly’, her book emphasizes the human virtues of kindness, generosity, a welcome for strangers and travellers, gentleness and magnanimity.
“It is not dogmatic and, being rural, recognises all creation as part of a religious way of life. The evil spirits the Druids had conjured up to keep the people in submission were replaced by a strong belief in the power of the Trinity, which surrounded the Celts and kept them safe from harm,” she explains.
The book, which contains sister Elizabeth Ruth’s own illustrations, looks at the main saints of Ireland such as St Patrick and St Brigit, co-patrons of the country, but also at the lives of lesser known saints and the impact they had in the shaping of Celtic Christianity, such as Sts Brenden and Cuthbert.
